M50 Manifold swap page
FAQ 1. Do I need to remap my ECU after M50 manifold installation? No, there is no need to get it remapped. Change in the airflow is within stock fuel preparation system limits and the computer adapts to the changes quite easily. However, an M50 intake conversion dedicated remap will not only restore some of the mid range torque lost in the process of installing a bigger manifold, but also further increase the top end power. 2. Can I use M50B20 manifold off of the 320i ('91-95')? No. The 320i (M50B20) intake manifold has different size runners than the 325i one, therefore it will not be suitable for this conversion. 3. Can I use the stock M50 intake air temperature (IAT) sensor? No. The M50 and M52 sensors temperature-to-resistance characteristics differ. The M50 sensor has lower resistance troughout the range incorrectly informing the ECU that the incoming air is warmer than it really is. ECU then is underfueling the engine, therefore holding its power back. Prolonged use may harm your engine. 4. Can I use a resistor to compensate the difference between M50 and M52 intake temperature sensors? No. The temperature-to-resistance curves of the two sensors are different meaning that the difference is not constant troughout the temperature range. In order to use the M50 IAT sensor it needs to be converter to M52 IAT sensor characteristics. 5. Where should I mount the sensor if I wanted to use the stock M52 unit? Ideally it should be mounted off the main stream to maintain close to original reference point. A lot of people stick/glue the sensor into the intake elbow between MAF and throttle body right in the middle of the air stream. This set up does not allow the incoming air to properly recover from turbulences caused by the MAF sensor. Also, mounting the sensor in this manner is not recommended for forced induction applications. 6. Can I perform the swap on my E46 382i? No. Early E46's were fitted with M52TU engines (TU stands for Technical Upgrade) which had a redesigned intake. Sadly the swap cannot be performed on any of the E46's. 7. What other models can benefit from installation of the M50 manifold? The manifold will suit the following vehicles provided they are fitted with either S52B32, M52B25 or M52B28 engines: E36 323i, 323is 328i, 328is, usM3 ODBII ('96 onwards) as well as in Z3 E36 2.8, E39 523i, 528i and E38 728i. Not suitable for M52TU engines. 8. What is the expected BHP gain? The manifold alone should give your engine anywhere between 10-20 BHP extra depending on the engine's condition and already fitted mods. However, the manifold swap combined with a dedicated remap plus a decent cold air intake, BBTB and less restrictive exhaust will, in most, cases bring 20-40 BHP on board. 9. Is the mid range torque loss noticeable? Yes, but the difference is not that big and most of the loss can be recovered by remapping the ECU to the bigger intake. However, the BHP gain up the top of the rev band more than makes up for the low-end torque loss.
